MIAMI, Aug. 8, 2012 – This weekend, more than 150 developers will gather in Miami at the University of Miami Life Science & Technology Park to participate in an AT&T Mobile App Hackathon. An additional 100 developers will join the competition remotely from Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Colombia. Participants will work together throughout the weekend to compete for more than $5,000 in cash and prizes.
Beginning Friday, Aug. 10, 2012 at 6:00 p.m. ET and running through the evening on Sunday, Aug. 12, the hackathon will host computer programmers, graphic designers and entrepreneurs from not only South Florida, but also Latin American technology hotbeds. The developers will break into teams and collaborate to create mobile applications that can form the foundation of successful startup technology businesses. Expert mentors will assist the teams and sponsors will provide complimentary access to API’s from AT&T, Amazon, Github and Almira.
Event partner Google+ will coordinate the international portion of the hackathon through its Hangout feature. The video chat will connect teams in four countries, enabling developers to communicate, share documents, interact and collaborate live with the developers in Miami.
Once the development period closes at 4:00 p.m. PT, developers will present the apps they’ve created to a panel of judges and angel investors for a chance to win prizes and even secure funding to forge a startup business.
“This hackathon represents Miami’s continued emergence as a vibrant and dynamic technology and entrepreneurship hub that is leveraging its international positioning to create globally crowdsourced opportunities and solutions,” said Faquiry Diaz, event sponsor and co-chair of FIU’s Americas Venture Capital Conference (AVCC).
Highlighting the growing South Florida technology and entrepreneurship ecosystem, the hackathon is a collaborative effort brought together by AT&T, ESENEM, AVCC, CVOX, GeekyBeach, FIU’s Eugenio Pino Global Entrepreneurship Center, Wexford Science & Technology, LAB Miami and The Knight Foundation.
The host venue is indicative of Miami’s growing technology scene. “The University of Miami Life Science & Technology Park is quickly emerging as South Florida’s hub for research and innovation and we are proud to serve as host,” said Bill Hunter, project leasing manager from Wexford Science & Technology, the park developer and a hackathon sponsor.
